About

Christina Pluhar plays the theorbo, harp, and Baroque guitar, but what she is probably best known for is founding L'Arpeggiata in Paris in 2000, an early music ensemble with a genuinely distinctive approach. Rather than treating 17th century Italian repertoire as a museum piece, she lets jazz and soul influences creep in, improvises freely, and occasionally invites a modern instrument into the mix. The result is something that sounds old and alive at the same time. Her discography with L'Arpeggiata is extensive, ranging from Monteverdi and Cavalli to more exploratory projects like Mediterraneo and Orfeo Chamán. She won her first major recognition back in 1992, taking first prize at the Festival of Early Music in Malmö as part of Ensemble La Fenice, and has been a fixture of the international Baroque scene ever since.
