About
Also known as: Clara-Jumi Kang
Clara Jumi Kang is a South Korean and German classical violinist who broke through in a big way when she took first place at the prestigious Indianapolis International Violin Competition in 2010, walking away with five additional prizes on top of the top spot. Her playing spans a huge range of orchestral and chamber contexts, and she has performed with ensembles from the Rotterdam Philharmonic and Seoul Philharmonic to the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, working alongside conductors like Valery Gergiev and Myung whun Chung. On record, Kang released her debut solo album Modern Solo on Decca in 2011, followed by a collaborative album of Schumann and Brahms sonatas with pianist Yeol Eum Son in 2016. Her 2020 recording of Beethoven's violin sonatas with pianist Sunwook Kim for Accentus earned strong critical praise. She was named Kumho Musician of the Year and listed among South Korea's one hundred most inspiring and influential people by The Dong A Ilbo in 2012.
