Coal Chamber carved out a distinctive corner of the nu metal world with a sound that mixed heavy riffs, gothic atmosphere, and Dez Fafara's raw vocal presence. Formed in Los Angeles in 1992 by Fafara and guitarist Meegs Rascón, they caught a massive break playing the first Ozzfest in 1996, where Sharon Osbourne took notice and became their manager. Their self titled debut went Gold, and their second album, Chamber Music, swung for the fences with a cover of Peter Gabriel's "Shock the Monkey" featuring Ozzy Osbourne, giving the band their biggest radio moment. The band has had a famously stop start run, disbanding in 2003 before reuniting in 2011, splitting again in 2016, and then coming back together a second time in 2022. Through all the lineup shifts and hiatuses, the core of Fafara, Rascón, and drummer Mike Cox has held things together. Their 2015 album Rivals marked a confident return, and with the 2022 reunion the band shows little sign of going away quietly.
