About
Codeine were among the bands that basically wrote the slowcore playbook: glacial tempos, Stephen Immerwahr's nasal, weary vocals, and John Engle's ringing Telecaster. They came out of New York in 1989 and leaned a bit more experimental than peers like Low, Idaho and Red House Painters, while never really changing their sound over the years. They only made two proper albums, Frigid Stars LP (first out on Glitterhouse, then Sub Pop) and The White Birch in 1994, plus the Barely Real EP in between. Drummer Chris Brokaw left for his other band Come, and Doug Scharin took over. After The White Birch they split, but the story kept going. A 2012 reunion came alongside a big Numero Group reissue, and in 2022 they put out Dessau, a set of songs recorded in 1992 that had been shelved for decades. More shows followed across Europe, the US and beyond.
