Colin Benders built one of the most surprising careers in Dutch music, going from hip hop orchestra conductor to live techno artist via modular synthesizer. Operating under the name Kyteman, he spent three years putting together his debut album The Hermit Sessions, a record that blended hip hop and jazz with raw beats and tender melodies. It hit the top five of the Dutch Album Charts, sold over 75,000 copies, and swept the major Dutch music prizes. His live outfit at the time, the Kyteman Orchestra, was an 18 piece ensemble that mashed opera, hip hop, drum and bass, and more into something genuinely hard to categorise. Around 2012 he quietly stepped back from the orchestra world and began exploring electronic music. These days he makes live techno using modular synthesizers, and during the COVID 19 lockdowns he kept things going with regular live streams.
