Swiss pianist Colin Vallon has spent over two decades building a reputation as one of the most distinctive voices in European jazz. Based in Lausanne, he leads a trio that has toured extensively across Europe, North America, and Asia, playing festivals in Paris, London, Montreal, Portland, and Tokyo among many others. His recordings on ECM, including Rruga, Le Vent, and Danse, showcase a sound that is spacious and carefully textured, very much at home on a label known for that aesthetic. Vallon is no one trick act, though. Beyond the trio, he has explored psychedelic rock territory with his quartet Ocre, dabbled in minimal improvisation with the group Coriolis, and composed for choreography and film. He has worked with trumpeters Erik Truffaz and Matthieu Michel, and collaborated with saxophonist Nicolas Masson on the ECM release Travelers. Multiple Swiss prizes and a nomination for the Swiss Music Prize in 2016 reflect just how seriously the local scene takes him.
