Common has been one of the more versatile figures in hip hop since the early 1990s, balancing sharp conscious lyricism with a career that stretches across rap, film, and television. Born Lonnie Rashid Lynn in Chicago, he built an underground following under the name Common Sense before signing with Relativity Records and dropping Can I Borrow a Dollar? in 1992. His reputation really took off with Resurrection in 1994, and by the time he linked up with the Soulquarians collective, albums like Like Water for Chocolate and Be had put him firmly in the conversation alongside hip hop's best. His work runs well beyond the booth. He won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Glory" alongside John Legend, written for the film Selma, and picked up a Primetime Emmy for "Letter to the Free" from the documentary 13th. He has appeared in films ranging from American Gangster to John Wick: Chapter 2, starred in the AMC series Hell on Wheels, and made his Broadway debut in 2023. Most recently he teamed up with Pete Rock on The Auditorium Vol. 1, released in 2024.
