Conchita Wurst is the bearded drag persona of Austrian singer Thomas Neuwirth, and the character became a global talking point after winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 for Austria with the sweeping ballad "Rise Like a Phoenix". The win turned Conchita into a genuine gay icon overnight, landing invitations to perform at the European Parliament and the United Nations Office in Vienna, and sparking fierce political controversy across Eastern Europe where conservative politicians called for boycotts and bans. Before Eurovision, Neuwirth had already put in the groundwork: a runner up finish on the Austrian casting show Starmania, a brief stint in the boyband Jetzt Anders!, and a second place in Austria's 2012 Eurovision national final as Conchita. The name itself is a layered joke, pairing Spanish slang with a German expression meaning roughly "I couldn't care less". After the 2014 win, the music kept coming, including the self titled debut album and the orchestral follow up "From Vienna With Love", recorded with the Wiener Symphoniker.
