About
Few metal bands have paid as high a price for their music as Confess. The Iranian groove and thrash metal duo of Nikan Khosravi and Arash Ilkhani were arrested in 2015, held in solitary confinement, and eventually handed a combined sentence of 14.5 years in prison by the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Tehran, with Khosravi also receiving 74 lashes. Their crime, essentially, was playing metal: the charges ranged from blasphemy and anti religious lyrics to running an illegal band in the "Satanic metal and rock music style" and speaking to foreign radio stations. After being granted political asylum in Norway, they kept going. Their album Revenge at All Costs, delayed two years, finally landed in January 2022, and they have expanded their live lineup with two Norwegian musicians. The music itself sits somewhere between groove metal, thrash, and nu metal, with lyrics that pull no punches on religion or politics. Considering what those words cost them, that feels entirely deliberate.
