About
Conrad Tao is one of those rare musicians who genuinely operates across multiple worlds at once. As a pianist and composer, he has taken on commissions from the New York Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, and Dallas Symphony Orchestra, while also releasing a synthpop album called Eyelids back in 2012 alongside a solo piano EP focused on Debussy and Stravinsky. Eight consecutive ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards give you a sense of how seriously the classical establishment takes his compositional work. What makes Tao hard to pin down is exactly that refusal to stay in one lane. He produced and hosted the UNPLAY Festival in New York City in 2013, a three night event that felt very much like his own vision of what a music festival could be. His YouTube presence has included covers of Beyoncé and the Beach Boys sitting comfortably next to pieces by David Lang, which tells you something about the breadth of his musical thinking.
