About
Control Machete put Monterrey on the hip hop map in a serious way. Their 1996 debut Mucho Barato moved over 100,000 copies in Mexico within its first weeks and eventually cleared 500,000 units across Latin America, which is a remarkable run for Spanish language hip hop at the time. The lead single "¿Comprendes Mendes?" was all over MTV Latin America and scored the group an MTV Video Music Award nomination for International Viewer's Choice in 1997. They were the commercial face of the Avanzada Regia movement out of Nuevo León, blending raw street energy with a sound that crossed into rock en español and Latin alternative territory. Their reach went well beyond music charts. Songs like "Sí Señor", "De Perros Amores" and "Pesada" landed on the Amores perros soundtrack, one of the most talked about Latin American films of its era. Their music also turned up in films like Land of the Dead and Crank, and in video games including Crackdown and Scarface: The World Is Yours. They even recorded "Danzón" in Cuba with Buena Vista Social Club's Rubén González. The group has been on hiatus since 2004, but neither Pato Machete nor DJ Toy Kenobi has ruled out a reunion.
