About
Also known as: Cookin' On 3 Burners, Cooking on Three Burners
Melbourne's Cookin' On 3 Burners might have stayed a beloved cult act in the funk underground forever, if a French DJ hadn't got hold of a six year old track. Kungs remixed their 2009 song 'This Girl', originally featuring vocalist Kylie Auldist, and the result hit number one in France, Germany, Belgium, Hungary, Latvia and Scotland, and climbed to number two on the UK Singles Chart. Not bad for a Hammond organ trio that had been quietly doing their thing since 1997. The group, now made up of Jake Mason on Hammond organ, guitarist Dan West and drummer Ivan Khatchoyan, has always mixed instrumentals with well chosen vocal features. Their album Baked, Broiled and Fried reworked Gorillaz' 'Feel Good Inc.' and won them fans in the B boy community, while Blind Bet brought in guests like Tex Perkins and Daniel Merriweather. A cover of Gary Numan's 'Cars' and collaborations with Australian hip hop artist Mantra show just how far their range stretches beyond straight funk.
