Pitchfork once called Craig Finn "a born storyteller who's chosen rock as his medium," and that pretty much nails it. As the frontman of the Hold Steady, he built a cult following on the strength of his third person narrative lyrics, full of recurring characters, references to literature and religion, and a very honest reckoning with the darker side of a party lifestyle. He put it bluntly himself: he's always been drawn to the hangover, not just the confetti. Outside the Hold Steady, Finn has carved out a serious solo career across six albums, the most recent being Always Been (2025), produced by Adam Granduciel of the War on Drugs, whose band serves as Finn's backing outfit throughout. The Economist picked it as one of their top ten albums of that year. He's also collaborated with Titus Andronicus, P.O.S, the Living End, and the Baseball Project, among others, and hosts two podcasts exploring memory, creativity, and music.
