Few bands did more to bridge hardcore punk and thrash metal than the Cro Mags, a New York City outfit whose 1986 debut The Age of Quarrel remains a landmark record in both genres. They were also early adopters of Krishnacore, a corner of hardcore built around Krishna consciousness, which set them apart from the pack before that was even a recognized thing. The lineup disputes and legal battles are almost as famous as the music: co founder Harley Flanagan eventually won exclusive rights to the Cro Mags name in 2019, with former singer John Joseph and drummer Mackie Jayson continuing under the tag Cro Mags JM. Across six studio albums the band shifted sound more than once. Best Wishes leaned into heavy metal territory, while Revenge in 2000 pulled back toward their raw hardcore roots. Flanagan is the only musician to appear on every Cro Mags album, despite having left and rejoined the band several times over the years.
