Curtis Salgado is one of those rare figures who shaped music history from the sidelines before ever becoming a household name. When John Belushi was in Eugene filming Animal House in the late 1970s, he crossed paths with Salgado and became so obsessed with his blues style that he based the entire Blues Brothers concept on him. The debut Blues Brothers album is dedicated to Salgado, and Cab Calloway's character in the film carries his name. Based in Portland and equally at home on harmonica or out front as a vocalist, Salgado has spent decades building serious blues credentials, from years with The Robert Cray Band and a stint fronting Roomful of Blues, to a brief run as lead singer with Santana. He has racked up multiple Blues Music Awards, including Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year across several years and the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year in 2013. His 2024 album Fine By Me earned him a Blues Music Award for Soul Blues Album, proof that his run of form shows no signs of slowing.
