About

The CvA Symfonieorkest is the symphony orchestra of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, bringing together student musicians for ambitious full scale orchestral programmes. The ensemble takes on repertoire that demands serious interpretive muscle: Shostakovich's Eighth Symphony, written in 1943 and saturated with the darkness of wartime, sits comfortably in its wheelhouse, as does the lyrical late romanticism of Richard Strauss's Vier letzte Lieder, settings of poems by Eichendorff and Hesse. Conductors including Karel Deseure and Leonard Elschenbroich have stood at its podium. Beyond the standard repertoire, the orchestra regularly makes space for new compositions by CvA students, giving emerging composers a full symphonic platform. Soloists also feature prominently; the orchestra has served as the backdrop for competitions such as the Nationaal Cello Concours, with Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto as the centrepiece, a work that pushes soloists through the full emotional spectrum from brooding melancholy to near ferocious virtuosity.
