Few bands capture the raw energy of Orange County hardcore quite like D.I., the Fullerton punk outfit that has been keeping it loud since 1981. Founded by vocalist Casey Royer after stints with Adolescents and Social Distortion, D.I. blended the gritty OC hardcore sound with surf and new wave flavors from the very start, a combination that turned up on their self titled debut EP and never really left their DNA. Tracks like "Richard Hung Himself" became touchstones, and a memorable appearance in Penelope Spheeris's 1983 film Suburbia gave the band a place in punk history when mainstream media barely acknowledged the genre. Though D.I. never cracked the mainstream, their fingerprints are all over the bands that did, with acts like The Offspring, Pennywise, Face to Face and Guttermouth all citing their influence. The lineup has shuffled constantly over the decades, with Royer the one permanent fixture through it all. Albums like Horse Bites Dog Cries, widely considered their finest studio work, and the later Caseyology showed the band could keep the fire going across very different eras. They have stayed active into the 2010s, releasing the United We Slam EP and continuing to tour.
