About
Also known as: Dr. Brat, Shawntae Harris
Da Brat made history with her 1994 debut Funkdafied, which became the first album by a solo female rapper to go platinum in the US. That record's lead single hit number one on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart and broke into the top ten of the Hot 100, announcing her as a genuine force in hip hop. Signed to Jermaine Dupri's So So Def label, she built a reputation through the late 1990s as one of the most in demand guest rappers around, showing up on records by Mariah Carey, Missy Elliott, Lil' Kim and more. Her third album Unrestricted cracked the top five of the Billboard 200, and her duet with Carey in 2003 brought a hip hop twist to a soul classic. More recently she released the single Have U 2 Myself with Jessica Betts in 2025.
