About
Dan Deacon makes electronic music that refuses to sit still. Based in Baltimore, he built his reputation on wildly participatory live shows where the audience becomes as much a part of the performance as the music itself. His sound pulls from glitch, neo psychedelia and post minimalism, and it clicked commercially with 2007's Spiderman of the Rings, a record Pitchfork put in its Best New Music section and ranked 24th in its top albums of the year. Deacon himself called its success something that "completely changed my life in every possible way." Since then he has pushed into increasingly ambitious territory. His 2012 album America processed his conflicted feelings about cross country travel and national identity, while Gliss Riffer from 2015 turned a more personal, anxious lens on his songwriting. He has also carved out a strong parallel career as a film composer, scoring documentaries like All Light, Everywhere and Ascension, as well as Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt and the blockbuster Venom: The Last Dance. His fifth solo album Mystic Familiar arrived in 2020 on Domino Records.
