About
Daniël Belinfante was a Dutch Jewish composer born in Amsterdam in 1893, murdered in Auschwitz in 1945. His music went unrecorded for decades, making its first appearance on disc as part of the Missing Voices collection, a project initiated by pianist Dimitri Malignan dedicated to recovering and championing works by composers who were persecuted during the Holocaust. The music Belinfante left behind sits in a tradition that connects him to composers like Bach, Chopin, Schumann, Debussy and Milhaud, whose aesthetics ran close to his own or who shaped his creative thinking. Hearing his work alongside those names makes the scale of what was lost feel immediate and specific.
