Playing saxophone, trumpet, and flute, Daniel Carter has spent decades carving out a distinctive space in the New York free jazz scene. His output is staggering: a sprawling discography of collaborative records on labels like 577 Records and AUM Fidelity, made alongside figures such as William Parker, Matthew Shipp, Thurston Moore, and Yo La Tengo. He moves comfortably across genre lines, turning up on records by hip hop act Antipop Consortium and indie outfit Castanets as well as deep free jazz sessions. Carter is a core member of several cooperative groups, including Test, Other Dimensions In Music, and Ghost Moth, which speaks to how much he values collective, communal music making. In 2015 New York threw a whole festival to mark his 70th birthday, and his 2025 release Stream of a Dream shows he is still very much at it.
