Dark Sarah is the brainchild of Finnish vocalist Heidi Parviainen, who left Amberian Dawn in 2012 and channelled her energy into something far more ambitious: a cinematic symphonic metal project built around a sprawling fantasy concept. The whole thing follows a character called Sarah across three worlds, the world of the living, the realm of the dead, and a spirit world above, spread across the albums Behind the Black Veil, The Puzzle, and The Golden Moth. Each record pulls in guest vocalists who play specific story roles, with collaborators including Tony Kakko of Sonata Arctica, Charlotte Wessels of Delain, Marko Hietala of Nightwish, and JP Leppäluoto, who eventually joined the band's lineup proper. All three albums were funded through crowdfunding campaigns, with fans backing each one in full. The result is gothic and symphonic metal that sits closer to a fantasy film score than a typical metal record.
