One of the architects of the Gothenburg sound, Dark Tranquillity have been shaping melodic death metal since 1989, long before the genre had a name everyone agreed on. Alongside At the Gates and In Flames, they helped define what that city's scene would mean to heavy music, blending ferocious riffs with atmospheric keyboards and a melodic sensibility that sets them apart from straightforward death metal. Vocalist Mikael Stanne is the one constant thread through the band's history, having taken over the mic after original singer Anders Fridén departed to join In Flames. Over more than a dozen albums, the band has never stayed in one place for long. Projector brought in piano and clean baritone vocals and earned a Swedish Grammy nomination. Damage Done swung back toward crushing heaviness. Fiction balanced both impulses at once. Frequent lineup shifts between 2015 and 2021 left Stanne as the sole founding member, joined by longtime keyboardist Martin Brändström, but the core identity of the band has stayed remarkably intact.
