About

Also known as: Dark Throne

Darkthrone started out in 1986 as a death metal band called Black Death, then ditched the genre in the early 1990s and helped define Norwegian black metal. Their first three black metal records, A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Under a Funeral Moon and Transilvanian Hunger, are often called the Unholy Trinity and sit among the most influential black metal albums ever made. Since 1993 the band has been a duo, Fenriz and Nocturno Culto, and they famously stay out of the mainstream. They stopped playing live after a sold out show at Rockefeller in Oslo in 1996. The story gets more interesting after that. From The Cult Is Alive in 2006 they moved toward blackened crust punk and speed metal, and since The Underground Resistance in 2013 they have folded in classic heavy metal, doom and thrash, a sound sometimes called blackened heavy metal. With 22 studio albums to their name, they have even worked with the National Library of Norway on exhibitions about black metal and Norwegian culture.
