About
David Afkham built his reputation the hard way, winning the prestigious Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in 2008 and stepping straight into the role of assistant conductor at the London Symphony Orchestra. He then spent three years with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra before landing his first principal conductorship with the Orquesta Nacional de España in 2014, a post that eventually grew into the role of chief conductor and artistic director of the Orquesta y Coro Nacional de España. His tenure there was extended through September 2026, a sign of how well the partnership worked. Afkham's work spans orchestral and vocal repertoire, and he has recorded for Berlin Classics alongside his partner, soprano Christiane Karg. His style sits comfortably in the classical and impressionist traditions, and his conducting draws on a background that includes serious training in both piano and violin. In June 2026 he was appointed Commander of the Civil Order of Alfonso X, the Wise, recognising his contributions to music in Spain.
