About
David Helbock is an Austrian jazz pianist from Vorarlberg whose output ranges from solo piano records to inventive group projects, and his curiosity rarely sits still. He won prizes at the Montreux Jazz Piano Solo Competition in both 2007 and 2010, including the audience prize, and in 2011 received the Outstanding Artist Award from the Austrian government. His 2012 album Purple, a solo piano take on Prince songs including Kiss and Purple Rain, shows the playful side of a musician who also contributed to multiple records by composer Michael Mantler on ECM. Since signing with ACT Music in 2016 he has kept a busy release schedule, covering ground from John Williams film music played solo to the Austrian Syndicate project, a Joe Zawinul tribute featuring guests like Dhafer Youssef, Fred Wesley and Lakecia Benjamin. In 2025 he released two new albums: a live studio session with his long running Random/Control group featuring singer Fola Dada, and Faces of Night, a duo record with young Austrian bassist and cellist Julia Hofer.
