Out of Ghent, Belgium, De Beren Gieren is an electroacoustic jazz piano trio built around pianist Fulco Ottervanger, bassist Lieven Van Pée, and drummer Simon Segers. Their sound pulls freely from modern jazz, classical music, rock, and electronics, with improvisation sitting at the heart of everything they do. They kicked things off by winning the Jong Jazztalent competition at the Gent Jazz Festival in 2009, and have since played stages like the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Trondheim Jazzfestival. Over the course of seven albums, they have kept pushing the sonic envelope. One Mirrors Many, which the jazz magazine Jazzism placed at the top of its most influential albums list for 2015, layers electronic distortions over their acoustic instruments. The Detour Fish captures a live set in Ljubljana with Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva, while Dug Out Skyscrapers doubles down on the electronic direction. Their most recent album, What Eludes Us, came out in 2024.
