About
Also known as: DCD, [Dead Can Dance]
Few acts blur the line between ancient and modern quite like Dead Can Dance. Founded in Melbourne in 1981 by Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, the duo built a sound that pulls from European medieval and Renaissance traditions, ambient pop, darkwave, and world music, creating something that resists easy categorisation. Signing to 4AD in London, they were loosely tagged as goth early on, though the music quickly outgrew that label. Their 1993 album Into the Labyrinth was the commercial breakthrough, selling 500,000 copies worldwide and landing them in the Billboard 200, making them 4AD's biggest selling act. After disbanding in 1998, they reunited twice, first in 2005 for a world tour, then again in 2011 to record and tour Anastasis. Their most recent album, Dionysus, came out in 2018, followed by a European tour in 2022. Perry and Gerrard have always made music on their own terms, and it shows.
