Death Grips operate somewhere between hip hop, industrial noise, and full on sonic aggression, and that refusal to sit still has made them one of the most genuinely strange acts to break through in the last decade. The Sacramento trio, MC Ride on vocals, Zach Hill on drums, and Andy Morin on keys, released their free mixtape Exmilitary in 2011 and followed it almost immediately with The Money Store, which Pitchfork called "confrontational, abrasive, and chaotic". That debut landed on the Billboard 200 and earned them a cult following that has only grown more devoted since. Their career has been as chaotic as their music. They signed to Epic Records, then promptly leaked their second album No Love Deep Web for free download in breach of contract and got dropped. They announced they were breaking up in 2014, released a double album anyway, then quietly undid the breakup. Since Year of the Snitch in 2018 and a short EP for Warp Records' 30th anniversary in 2019, new material has been scarce, though Hill and MC Ride have confirmed the band remains active and a new album is in the works.
