About

Few bands in extreme metal are as deliberately mysterious as Deathspell Omega. The French black metal collective from Poitiers has never performed live, never confirmed who its members are, and refuses promotional photos or social media presence. What they do put out, though, consistently lands hard. Their early work was raw and Darkthrone influenced, but a sharp turn in 2004 with Si monvmentvm reqvires, circvmspice brought in Russian Orthodox chanting, choral arrangements, and a dense, technical approach that set them apart from almost everything else in the genre. From 2004 to 2010 they worked through a theological concept trilogy examining God, Satan, and metaphysical Satanism, drawing on the philosophies of Bataille and Hegel. Later work shifted ground entirely: The Furnaces of Palingenesia from 2019 is framed as a manifesto from a fictional dictator, explicitly aimed at dismantling authoritarian politics from both ends of the spectrum. Their most recent album, The Long Defeat, arrived in 2022 and the band described it as the opening of a third distinct era in their catalog.
