About

Also known as: Debashish Bhattacharya and Friends, Devāśiṣ Bhaṭṭācārya, Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya, देबाशीष भट्टाचार्य, ভট্টাচার্য

Debashish Bhattacharya didn't just play Indian classical music on slide guitar, he reinvented the whole relationship between the two. Working out of Kolkata, he created an entirely new genre called Hindustani Slide Guitar and built his own instruments to play it, most famously his "Trinity of Guitars": the 24 string Chaturangui, the 14 string Gandharvi, and the Anandi, a 4 string lap steel ukulele he named after his daughter. He's also composed three original Hindustani raags and introduced what is claimed to be the world's first ever Slide Guitar Syllabus. His albums regularly land in the Billboard World Music Charts top 10, and his 2003 collaboration with Bob Brozman, Mahima, is among his best known. A Grammy nomination followed in 2009 for Calcutta Chronicles. He's shared stages with John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain, recorded a late night improv session with Polish jazz musicians, and in January 2023 released The Sound of the Soul on McLaughlin's own label Abstractlogix. The breadth of what he does is genuinely hard to categorise.
