About
Deeds of Flesh built their reputation on some of the most relentlessly technical and brutal death metal to come out of California, drawing on the heaviness of Suffocation and the fretboard ferocity of bands like Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse. Their sound is defined by constantly shifting meters and tempos, atonal guitar riffs mixing palm muting and tremolo picking, and a dual vocal approach of low growls and high screams. One practical side effect of their existence: they founded Unique Leader Records, which grew into one of the most important death metal labels in the world. Their 2020 album Nucleus arrived as a tribute and a farewell of sorts to founding guitarist and vocalist Erik Lindmark, who died in 2018. The record features music Lindmark wrote and recorded before his death, and brought back founding member Jacoby Kingston as vocalist after years away. Guest spots from Corpsegrinder, Frank Mullen, Luc Lemay and a stack of other death metal heavyweights make it a genuine who's who of the genre.
