Deepak Ram is a South African born bansuri master whose playing refuses to sit still in any one tradition. A senior disciple of legendary flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, he weaves together Indian classical raga, jazz, blues and flamenco into something that feels entirely his own. His bansuri tone has turned up in some unexpected places too, including contributions to Juno Reactor's Shango and Labyrinth albums, the latter tied to the Matrix franchise, and on David Sylvian's Dead Bees on a Cake. His solo catalogue stretches across more than a decade of consistent output, from Flute for Thought in 1999 through to Indentured Blue in 2020, with collaborations alongside tabla masters Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri and Pandit Anindo Chatterjee along the way. His album Searching for Satyam landed him a South African Music Award for Best Instrumental Album in 2000, cementing his reputation well beyond South Africa's borders.
