Rod Modell, the Detroit rooted producer behind DeepChord, has been quietly shaping dub techno and ambient techno since the mid 1990s. His sound sits somewhere between the minimal Berlin aesthetic of Basic Channel and the harder industrial edge of Detroit techno, dense with texture and slow moving atmosphere. Working originally alongside Mike Schommer, DeepChord evolved into Modell's solo vehicle, and he also co founded the eponymous Detroit record label. Some of his most celebrated work came through his collaboration with Stephen Hitchell as Echospace and cv313, including the 2007 record The Coldest Season on Modern Love. His catalogue runs deep across labels like Soma and Astral Industries, with releases such as Hash Bar Loops, Sommer, Ultraviolet Music, and Auratones building a reputation for immersive, slow burn electronic music. He has also worked with fellow Detroit native Mike Huckaby, and the 2022 album Functional Design on Soma shows he is still very much at it.
