Every song Defeater has ever written fits into a single sprawling story: the unraveling of a working class New Jersey family in the years after World War II, told across albums, EPs and singles in a way that rewards obsessive listeners. The Boston melodic hardcore band built that concept into five full length records, starting with Travels in 2008 and running through their self titled 2019 album, produced by Will Yip. Letters Home from 2013 cracked the Billboard Top 200 at number 72 and hit number one on the vinyl chart, a rare crossover moment for a band rooted firmly in hardcore. Alongside La Dispute, Touché Amoré and Pianos Become the Teeth, Defeater were central to the loosely defined wave of post hardcore bands that defined the early 2010s. Their later records, Abandoned and the self titled album, came out on Epitaph, broadening their reach without softening the punch. They have shared stages at the Vans Warped Tour and Hevy Music Festival, and toured with Comeback Kid, Bane and Carpathian among others.
