Few death metal bands have stirred up as much controversy as Deicide, and that reputation is very much by design. Out of Tampa, Florida, the band built their identity around Satanic and anti Christian lyrical themes so uncompromising that religious groups, political organizations, and animal rights activists all lined up to condemn them. Vocalist and bassist Glen Benton became the public face of that notoriety, and the band wore every ban and lawsuit like a badge of honor. Musically, Deicide sits at the heavier end of death metal, and their first three albums, Deicide, Legion, and Once Upon the Cross, are considered essential records in the genre. Legion in particular pushed them to mainstream recognition in 1992, making them the second best selling death metal act of the SoundScan era, behind only Cannibal Corpse. Over a career spanning more than three decades, they have put out thirteen studio albums and kept the intensity dialed up throughout.
