Dejan Lazić is a Croatian pianist and composer whose live recording of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Kirill Petrenko won the German Echo Klassik Award in 2009. That recording is a good entry point into what makes him distinctive: a musician who brings genuine creative investment to the repertoire, not just technical polish. He records for Channel Classics and has built a series called Liaisons that pairs composers in unexpected combinations, such as Scarlatti with Bartók and Schumann with Brahms. He is also a composer in his own right, writing cadenzas for Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven concertos and arranging Brahms's Violin Concerto for piano and orchestra, a version he premiered with the Atlanta Symphony and later performed at the BBC Proms. His reach as a performer is wide, from Tokyo's Suntory Hall to the Beijing Great Hall of the People, where he played Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto at a televised pre Olympics gala for 7,000 people.
