DevilDriver got their name from an unexpected place: Italian witchcraft. Frontman Dez Fafara, formerly of nu metal act Coal Chamber, stumbled across the term in a book on Stregheria his wife owned. The word refers to bells used by Italian witches to drive away evil forces, and Fafara thought it suited his life perfectly. Formed in Santa Barbara in 2002 and signed to Roadrunner Records, the band quickly built a reputation for punishing groove metal and relentless touring, sharing stages with Machine Head, Fear Factory, and In Flames. Their second album, The Fury of Our Maker's Hand, was the one that really opened ears, debuting on the Billboard 200 and earning strong reviews for what Kerrang! called a fresh approach to modern metal. The Last Kind Words followed in 2007 and pushed them further, peaking at number 48 on the Billboard 200 and landing them a slot at Download Festival alongside Iron Maiden.
