Devourment basically invented the template for slam death metal, and their 1999 debut Molesting the Decapitated remains a touchstone for just how heavy and relentless the genre can get. Formed in Dallas in 1995, the band built their sound around brutal breakdowns, guttural vocals and a willingness to push extremity to its logical limits. Reviews called the record almost comically brutal, which was very much the point. The band's history is genuinely chaotic: three splits, three reformations, a vocalist jailed mid career, and lineups that shuffled constantly around the one constant of drummer Brad Fincher. Through all of it they kept releasing records, including Butcher the Weak, Unleash the Carnivore, Conceived in Sewage and Obscene Majesty on Relapse Records. Vocalist Ruben Rosas and bassist Dave Spencer round out the current lineup alongside guitarist Chris Andrews, and Devourment continue to be the gold standard for anyone serious about brutal death metal.
