About
Few sopranos navigate the full stretch from sparkling coloratura fireworks to the emotional weight of bel canto tragedy the way Diana Damrau does. The German soprano from Günzburg built her reputation on roles like the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute and Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos before gradually moving into heavier territory, taking on Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor and Violetta in La traviata. She made Metropolitan Opera history in the 2007/08 season by singing both Pamina and the Queen of the Night in different performances of the same Magic Flute run, then retired the Queen for good after more than 15 productions. Since going freelance in 2002, she has been a fixture at the world's top houses, from the Bavarian State Opera and Vienna State Opera to the Met, where she appeared in 12 consecutive seasons from her debut in 2005/06. She also performs extensively on the concert and lieder circuit alongside French bass baritone Nicolas Testé. Her recording catalogue spans dozens of opera and lieder albums on Warner/Erato Records, and she holds the title of Bavarian Kammersängerin.
