About
Greek pianist and composer Dimitris Karkoulias grew up musically between Athens and the Netherlands, studying jazz piano at the Conservatory of Athens and later at the Prins Claus Conservatoire in Groningen, where he is now based. His playing draws heavily from the tradition of jazz piano masters such as Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Kenny Barron and Mulgrew Miller, and that lineage comes through clearly in his work. He has shared the stage with figures like Jesse Davis and Mike Clark, and performed at festivals including JazzAhead, ESNS and Noorderzon. In 2024 he took home the Composition Award at the Jazz Conservatory Awards for his piece Little Something. The trio brings together bassist Frank Fiedler and drummer Gijs Dijkhuizen, giving Karkoulias a rhythm section with serious credentials. The result is layered, considered jazz that sits firmly in the acoustic tradition without feeling like a museum piece.
