About
Also known as: John Bennett
DJ Freak, the alias of English DJ and producer John Bennett, is credited as one of the first pioneers of the industrial hardcore and speedcore sound, having been active in that space since 1992. With over 50 albums to his name, he founded his own label Hard of Hearing in the early 1990s, releasing a string of gabber and hardcore records before the label wrapped up in 1998. His most recognized work came out on Killout, and he has also released through labels including Epitaph and Deadly Systems. Around 2011 he started exploring a different side of electronic music, putting out dark, spacey, minimal abstract techno as free downloads on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. He has also appeared on the Scottish label Motormouth Recordz, contributing to their Motörheadz compilation in 2012 and following it up with a digital EP in 2014. His mixes, covering territory from early hardcore to terror and breakcore, show he has kept his ear deep in the harder end of electronic music throughout his career.
