About
DJ K made one of the stranger breakouts in recent dance music. A producer from Diadema, Brazil, he cooked up a style he calls funk bruxaria, which mixes funk mandelão with horrorcore: tinnitus like high pitched tuin sounds, horror movie samples, distorted bass, maniacal laughter and sirens. His 2023 debut, Pânico no Submundo, came out on Nyege Nyege Tapes and was knocked together in a few days on his mum's laptop with FL Studio, with MCs often recording vocals on iPhones. Pitchfork gave it 7.9 out of 10, higher than its score for the Beatles' Yellow Submarine, which turned into a huge meme in Brazil. He followed up with O Fim! in 2024, a dirtier, more politically charged record on his own label Bruxaria Sound, which he set up to push other funk MCs and DJs. Before all that, he was making tracks for the paredão speaker wall parties in São Paulo's favelas, and the sound still carries that raw street energy.
