Leicester's DJ SS, real name Leroy Small, has been shaping drum and bass and jungle since the genre's earliest days. He co founded Formation Records, a label that grew into a sprawling network of over 30 sub labels and gave early platforms to artists like John B and Twisted Individual. The label was especially hot between 1991 and 1994, pumping out breakbeat hardcore and jungle classics including The Psycho EP and the Colour Series. His biggest track remains "The Lighter" from 1995, built around a sample from the Love Story theme, and it has never really stopped being played. Before all this, he was cutting his teeth as a hip hop and rare groove DJ under the name Scratchen Stein, and was one of the first to throw large indoor raves in the UK, pulling 6,000 people to Donington Park as early as 1991. He has since DJed worldwide and popped up on BBC 1Xtra's D&B M1X to dig into the Formation back catalogue.
