About

Also known as: Wahyu Affandi

Doel Sumbang built his name on lyrics that say the quiet part out loud. The "Sumbang" in his stage name means discordant or against custom, a tag producer Handoko Kusmo gave him for songs that were blunt, colloquial and cheerfully impolite. His first album came together while he was living rough on Braga Street in Bandung, and his sharp social commentary aimed at the New Order government got one of his songs temporarily banned. He sings in both Indonesian and Sundanese, writing Sundanese pop about everyday Sundanese life, usually wrapped in playful melodies and comedic wordplay. In the 1980s he moved into ballads, covering love and social critique alike. The 1990s brought a big boost with the duet album "Kalau Bulan Bisa Ngomong" alongside Nini Carlina. His stage name Doel comes from his given name Abdoel, a nickname he picked up from the writer and theatre figure Remy Sylado.
