About
Douwe Eisenga writes music that refuses to stay in one lane. The Dutch composer pulls from pop, baroque, twelve tone techniques, and eastern musical patterns and blends them into something that sits comfortably under the minimalist and contemporary classical umbrella without sounding like a textbook exercise. Based in Zeeland since 1993, he has written for ensembles like the Xenakis Ensemble and Francis B. Quartet, as well as for solo pianists of note. His 2003 piece Requiem Aeternam 1953, a composition for choir and orchestra marking the 50th anniversary of the North Sea flood, is probably his most talked about work. But the piece that has quietly built a loyal following is For Mattia, a piano composition he wrote at the request of two parents mourning the loss of their daughter. It has appeared on the Dutch Classical Top 400 broadcast every year since its release in 2017, which says a lot about how deeply it lands with listeners.
