Downfall of Gaia started as a crust punk outfit before gradually shaping into something far heavier and more ambitious. The German band, formed in Hannover in 2008, built their reputation on long, sweeping songs that pull from sludge metal, atmospheric black metal and post metal, landing them a deal with Metal Blade Records ahead of their 2012 album Suffocating in the Swarm of Cranes, a concept record about depression and a descent into madness. Critics drew comparisons to Isis and Amebix, which about sums up the tension between crushing heaviness and bleak atmosphere they're known for. Since then they've kept pushing the sound into more aggressive territory. Their 2014 album Aeon Unveils the Thrones of Decay leaned into faster, more direct structures while staying thematically dark, dealing with time and the daily grind of existence. Atrophy followed in 2016, recorded in Berlin, and Ethic of Radical Finitude arrived in 2019. Along the way they've shared stages with Neurosis, played Hellfest and toured across Europe, the US, Japan and Australia.
