About

Driss El Maloumi is one of the most compelling oud players working today, bringing the Arabic short necked lute into conversations with jazz, Indian classical music, and the historical sounds of Al Andalus. The Moroccan composer and performer has built a reputation both as a solo artist, offering his own compositions alongside the occasional Berber folk tune, and as part of the celebrated trio 3MA, whose blend of kora, valiha and oud was described by world music legend Charlie Gillett as "satisfyingly unclassifiable." Songlines magazine went further, coining the term "African Chamber Music" for what the group does. His 2023 album Aswat earned the German Record Critics' Award in the Traditional Ethnic music category, praised for the call and response chemistry between his oud and North African and Middle Eastern percussion. Alongside his performing career, El Maloumi has a long creative partnership with Catalan musical director Jordi Savall, appearing on multiple Hespèrion XXI recordings and contributing to the sweeping Routes of Slavery project.
