About

Also known as: Dutch Swing Collega Band, The Dutch Swing College Band

Founded on 5 May 1945, the Dutch Swing College Band has been keeping traditional dixieland alive longer than just about anyone else on the planet. Clarinettist and saxophonist Peter Schilperoort shaped the band's warm, distinctively Dutch sound over nearly four decades of leadership, even stepping away briefly in the mid 1950s to work as an engineer before returning to the helm in 1960. Along the way the band shared the stage and studio with some genuine jazz legends, including Sidney Bechet, who actually wrote the Dutch Swing College Blues for them, plus Joe Venuti, Teddy Wilson, and Wild Bill Davison. They were the interval act at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1976, which tells you something about the reach they had beyond the jazz circuit. After Schilperoort's death in 1990, clarinettist Bob Kaper took over musical direction and kept the band on the road, mainly across Europe and Scandinavia. The lineup has evolved plenty over the years, but the core sound, rooted firmly in New Orleans dixieland and swing, has stayed recognisable throughout.
