About
Also known as: Andwele Gardner
Detroit's Dwele, born Andwele Gardner, built his name on a sound that sits right at the intersection of neo soul and hip hop, and his 2003 debut album Subject on Virgin Records made that clear from the jump. Before the label deal, he was pressing demo CDs and selling them out of his car trunk, which caught the attention of Slum Village and producer J Dilla. That connection put him on the map, and soon he was working with Bahamadia, Lucy Pearl, and New Sector Movement out of London. Most casual listeners know his voice from Kanye West's tracks, specifically as the uncredited singer on "Power" from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and as a featured guest on "Flashing Lights" from Graduation, both of which cracked the Billboard Hot 100 top 30. His own catalogue runs five studio albums deep, with Greater Than One featuring the Mike City produced single "What Profit". A 2005 review in The Independent nailed his style neatly: vintage soul with a serious hip hop edge.
